According to this criterion, there are only three varieties:
- Chinese. It includes Chinese, Japanese, Georgian, Vietnamese and Formosan teas.
- Assamese. The main representatives of this group are Ceylon, Indian, African teas.
- Cambodian. It is a kind of hybrid that combines the properties of the two previous varieties. Such bushes are grown in some areas of Indochina.
